One of the most important functions of a football club is the work it puts into the local community by using the power of football and sport to inspire young people to reach their potential and create lasting impact.

This workshop is designed to enhance the day-to-day workings of those that work as Heads of Community/ Foundations in football clubs.

Course Objectives and Target Audience

Objectives

  • Improve key leadership and management skills.

  • Investigate strategic planning, monitoring, and evaluation tools.

  • Enhance marketing and promotion of community programmes, with a view to highlighting the impact of them.

  • Current and former PFA members

  • Coaches that are working within community/foundation roles that are seeking their next career step.

Course Content

Module 1 - Football for Good – The Power of Football Club Foundations

Focus: Context, purpose, and the social impact of football clubs

  • The history and mission of football club charities
  • Introduction to sport for development & social impact
  • National frameworks (Premier League Charitable Fund, FA, Sport England)
  • Identifying local community needs and aligning club values
Module 2 - An Introduction to Player Foundations

Focus: Turning your passion into reality and effecting change

  • Support required to make your Vision a reality
  • Legal process including Charitable registration
  • Key elements required for success
  • Impact of Former Player Engagement in programmes and projects                         

Module 3 - Inclusive Community Engagement & Purpose-Driven Programmes

Focus: Connecting meaningfully with diverse communities

  • Trust-building and cultural competence
  • Engaging priority groups (youth, women, ethnic minorities, disabled)
  • Principles of inclusive programme design to boost participation
  • Community champions and peer-led outreach
Module 4 -Safeguarding and Ethics in Practice

Focus: Protecting participants, staff, and your organisation

  • Legal and ethical responsibilities
  • FA/Premier League safeguarding protocols
  • Case studies and incident response
  • Embedding safeguarding culture in delivery
Module 5 -Delivering and Communicating Impact – Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning

Focus: Proving and improving community impact and storytelling

  • Introduction to monitoring and evaluation (M&E)
  • Developing KPIs and impact indicators, using data to adapt and improve
  • Advocating for community through Media, social media, and club communications
  • Telling authentic stories that change minds
Module 6 - Fundraising & Bid Writing for Social Projects

Focus: Securing sustainable funding

  • Types of funding (grants, sponsorships, CSR, local government)
  • Writing compelling proposals (need, solution, evidence)
  • Budgeting and outcomes-focused bids
  • Managing funder relationships and reporting
Module 7 - Working with the Football Club and Board

Focus: Strategic relationship building

  • Negotiating services, in-kind support and formal agreements
  • Maximising the brand of the Football Club and Trustees engagement
  • Adapting to a change of ownership and managing upwards
  • Working together commercially and within the public sector  
Module 8 - Leading People & Managing Teams

Focus: Effective leadership and team management in community settings

  • Coaching vs managing styles
  • Staff wellbeing and performance support
  • Managing volunteers and sessional workers
  • Inclusive leadership and cultural intelligence
Module 9 - Facility Management

Focus:  How to turn a vision into success

  • Researching local needs and baseline evaluation
  • Importance of Partnerships and Donors
  • The Funding Process
  • Dreams become a reality - programme development and access for all the community    
Module 10 - Strategy, Innovation & Legacy

Focus: Long-term vision and creating lasting impact

  • From programme to strategy: scaling what works
  • Embedding learning, succession and legacy
  • Innovation in social impact through sport (tech, sustainability)
  • Visioning next 3–5 years of community trust work

Fees & Grants

The programme admission fee is £2,000 +VAT. Current and former PFA Members can apply for a grant of £2,000 +VAT to enrol in the programme at a lower cost.
